What Your Tap Water Is Trying to Tell You

The silent killer in most Indian gardens. It looks clean. It tastes fine. And every time you water, you may be salting your soil.

Here is a strange truth about Indian gardens. We worry about soil. We worry about sunlight, fertiliser, pests, drainage. We almost never worry about the water — and yet, in three generations of running this business, we have come to believe that water is the single most underestimated cause of indoor and balcony plant decline in this country.

Tap water in India is not bad. It is engineered for human bodies. But what is engineered for a human body is not always kind to a root system. A plant cannot filter what it drinks. Whatever is in the can goes straight to the root, every day, for years. Over time, even small amounts of the wrong thing add up — to crusted soil, locked-up nutrients, and a plant that just never quite thrives.

This piece is about reading what’s actually in your tap, and what to do about it. Most of the fixes cost nothing.

The Three Things Worth Knowing

You do not need a chemistry degree to understand water. You need three numbers, and you can read them off any cheap TDS meter for less than ₹500, or estimate them from the city tool above. They are: TDS, pH, and hardness. Each tells you something different.

The total weight of dissolved minerals — calcium, magnesium, sodium, chlorides — left behind when water evaporates. Under 200 ppm: ideal. 200–500: workable. Over 500: problems will accumulate. Above 1000: most plants will struggle long-term.

What it means
The lock on your nutrients

Most Indian municipal water is alkaline (pH 7.5–8.5). Plants prefer slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.0) for the roots to absorb iron, manganese, and zinc. Alkaline water locks these nutrients up — they’re in the soil, but the plant can’t reach them.

What it means
The white crust on everything

The same minerals that leave white scale on your taps and geysers leave the same scale in your soil and on your roots. Over months, they raise pH, clog soil pores, and form a crust that blocks oxygen. The simplest sign of hard water: white residue on the rim of the pot.

What Hard Water Actually Does to a Root

Imagine drinking a glass of water that has a single grain of salt in it. You wouldn’t notice. Now imagine drinking that same glass every day for a year — and being unable to get rid of the salt because you have no kidneys. That is roughly what happens to a potted plant watered with hard tap water.

Salts and minerals accumulate at the root zone faster than they can be flushed out. Three things follow, in this order:

One: the soil pH rises. Most pot soil starts slightly acidic — perfect for nutrient uptake. After a year of alkaline tap water, it drifts up to 7.5 or 8. Iron is now locked up. The plant develops yellow leaves with green veins. Most owners reach for fertiliser. The fertiliser doesn’t help — the iron was always there, it’s just unavailable.

Two: a salt crust forms. White, sometimes greyish, around the rim of the pot and on the soil surface. The visible crust is just the part you can see. Most of it is sitting around the roots, drawing moisture away from them by simple osmosis. The plant looks thirsty even when the soil is wet.

Three: the soil seals up. Calcium and magnesium ions cause clay particles to clump and compact. Water stops draining properly. The roots, deprived of oxygen, begin to rot. By this point, most owners blame “overwatering” and the pot is thrown out.

None of this is dramatic. None of it kills a plant in a week. It is a slow erosion — a year, two years — and it explains a remarkable percentage of the indoor plants that “just don’t seem happy” in Indian apartments.

Most plants in Indian apartments are not dying of disease. They are dying of dinner.

The Bucket Test

No meter. No lab. Just a bucket and three days. The oldest way to read water.

Fill a clear bucket with tap water. Note the cloudy bubbles and any chemical smell — that’s chlorine, dissolved gases, and fine air. Cover loosely. Wait.

The bucket test is not a chemistry exam. It is older than chemistry. Three things to look for after three days:

Sediment at the bottom. Heavier minerals and sand-fine particulates settle out. If you see a visible layer, your water is carrying enough solid matter that it is worth filtering before use.

A faint white film on the surface. This is the beginning of a calcium crust — the same thing that will accumulate in your pots over months. Skim it off and you can see how much had been suspended in the water.

Chlorine smell, gone. If the water smelled chemical when you drew it, give it 24 hours uncovered. Most municipal chlorine evaporates within a day. This is the simplest and most universal Indian water-fix: keep tomorrow’s watering water in a bucket overnight, and you have already done more good than ninety percent of plant owners.

The Cheap, Old Fixes

Almost every solution to bad tap water is older than the problem. Indian gardeners knew these tricks before TDS meters existed. They still work.

The overnight bucket. Leave the next day’s water out, uncovered, in a bucket or open vessel. Chlorine evaporates. Suspended particulates settle. The water that’s left is gentler. This single habit — the laziest fix on this list — solves about thirty percent of urban plant water problems.

Rainwater. The single best thing you can give a houseplant. Naturally slightly acidic (pH around 5.6–6.5), zero TDS, no chlorine, no fluoride. During the monsoon, set out buckets and barrels and store what you can. Even half your watering rotated through rainwater will visibly transform plants within two months. We have customers who collect monsoon water in 200-litre barrels and use it through the entire dry season.

RO discharge water — diluted. Most Indian apartments now have RO water purifiers, which discard 3–4 litres of brine for every 1 litre purified. That brine is too concentrated to use directly, but diluted with an equal part of plain tap water (or used on hardy outdoor plants that tolerate salts — bougainvillea, hibiscus, frangipani, palm trees), it stops being waste. We have written about this at length elsewhere; the point is, it’s free, and most of it currently runs into a drain.

A pinch of citric acid, or a splash of vinegar, once a month. A teaspoon of vinegar in five litres of water lowers the pH just enough to free up locked iron, without harming roots. Use this once or twice a month on plants showing chlorosis (yellow leaves with green veins). It works.

Activated charcoal in the watering can. An old houseplant trick: a small piece of activated charcoal, like the kind sold for aquariums, sits at the bottom of your watering can. It absorbs chlorine, traps some impurities, and lasts for months. Costs less than a hundred rupees.

None of these are silver bullets. All of them stack. Use two or three together and the difference becomes visible in weeks.

The Plants That Don’t Care

One last thing worth saying. Not every plant suffers equally from bad water. If you live somewhere with genuinely hard or saline tap water and you don’t want to faff with rainwater barrels, the simplest fix of all is to choose plants that don’t mind.

Pothos (money plant), snake plant, ZZ plant, spider plant, and most succulents will tolerate hard tap water for years without visible problem. Bougainvillea, hibiscus, frangipani, and oleander are happy outdoors with even the saltiest borewell water. Curry leaf, lemongrass, and chillies are more forgiving than most herbs.

The plants that suffer most: ferns, calatheas, alocasias, peace lilies, blueberries, citrus in pots, and most tropical foliage with thin soft leaves. These are the ones that need rainwater, RO water, or a pH-corrected supply to thrive. If yours is failing and you’re using straight tap water, the water is the most likely cause — not the lighting, not the fertiliser, not the season.

The Reading Order That Matters

The framework, again, is simple. Tap each step as you do it.

  • 1. Look at the rim. Check your pots for a white or grey crust around the soil edge. Any crust at all means hard or saline water.
  • 2. Run the bucket test. Fill a clear bucket. Wait three days. Check for sediment, surface film, and chlorine smell.
  • 3. Switch to overnight water. For one month, water only with water that has stood overnight. Compare before and after.
  • 4. Set a rainwater barrel. Before the next monsoon, put out one large vessel. A single season of stored rainwater can carry a houseplant collection for months.

Now you know what your plants have been drinking.

One Last Letter, From Us

Of all the things we have written about in this series, water is the one we most wish someone had told us about thirty years ago. We watched our parents and grandparents grow magnificent gardens on well water and rainwater and never once worry about TDS or chlorine. The water they used was, by accident of geography and history, almost ideal. It is a luxury our generation has lost without quite noticing.

The tap water in most Indian cities is a triumph of public health engineering. It is safe to drink. It does not give you cholera. It is also, for plants, a mild and persistent insult — repeated every day, year after year, until eventually the gardener starts to wonder why nothing grows the way it should.

You don’t need a filter, a meter, or new equipment. You need a bucket, an overnight wait, and — when the rains come — a vessel set out in the open. The fix is older than the problem. We hope this letter reaches you in time for the next monsoon.
